Reflection by Laurann Donahue

Today's Gospel: Matthew 6:7-15

This passage should be a favorite of every Christian. Here, Jesus Himself gives us a structure for prayer. While we do pray the Our Father prayer in Mass, it is also meant as a map to construct our own prayer.

"Our Father . . . hallowed be Your name." It is only right and good that we should praise God in our words as well as in our deeds. Praise His name. Praise His attributes. Praise His works. Praise Him for the gift of His Son. Praise Him for the gift of the Holy Spirit. When we praise God, we are in union with the angels.

"Thy will be done." Jesus Christ has shown us the face of God on earth. Just as Christ did, we should do whatever God wills--no matter what.

"Give us this day . . ." Yes, we are allowed to ask God for what we need. We should try to set aside our selfish wants and only ask for what we need. Ask for the needs of others, too, so that we remember the gifts God has given us.

"Forgive us." Ask for forgiveness on a daily basis. Try your best to forgive those who wrong you. Forgiveness heals.

"Lead us not into temptation." God doesn't tempt us but the world does. We ask that He protect us and stop us from being tempted. We need His strength to endure the temptation to sin.

Every necessary thing needed for our spiritual growth, healing, and strength is contained in Jesus Christ's model for prayer.

Ponder:

Do you use Jesus' model for prayer?

Pray:

Dear Lord, thank You for the gift of instruction on prayer. Help me to grow, heal, and gain strength from prayer.
