Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:38-42
We’ve all been in situations when we know for a fact that a person is incorrect in what they are saying. Or they accuse or ridicule us of something that we just know in our hearts isn’t true.
It is very tempting to refute these comments, especially if they are said in front of other people. It is our nature to want to defend ourselves and always give the appearance of being right or good. However, I know I feel better about myself on the occasions when I can keep quiet and not make a stink or start an argument. It involves taking the high road and not stooping to their level by making them seem ignorant just to make myself look better.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is telling His followers the same thing. He says to “offer no resistance to one who is evil” and turn the other cheek when struck (physically or emotionally). It is more Christ-like to refuse to rise to the challenge of accusations and possibly lose our cool. That is when things get said that shouldn’t be said out loud or in a tone that isn’t kind.
Jesus spoke wisely to those who tested Him, He turned the question back on them, or He didn’t say anything at all. These are the examples we are to follow if we want to be like Jesus.
Ponder:
Is there a conversation you need to ask forgiveness for when you could’ve spoken with more kindness?
Pray:
My dear Jesus, thank You for setting a good example for us in maintaining self-control in our conversations. Help me to remember to turn the other cheek and reply only with kindness.
