Reflect on Matthew 6:19-23 and discover the importance of prioritizing faith, love, and charity over material possessions in our daily lives.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 6:19-23
When I think of moths, I think of my clothes closet and the traps we set in order to catch the moths before they ruin our clothes. When I think of rust, I think of the importance of cleaning our cars in the winter before the salt from the icy roads sits too long on them, causing the metal to break down and rust. Also, keeping our metal garden tools clean so they don’t get rusty, making them dull and ineffective.
The third thing Jesus warns His followers of is worrying too much about the material things we own that someone would want to steal. I think about the money we spend on home security systems, front door cameras and locks, and insurance policies to protect our homes and their contents.
All three of these warnings wouldn’t be necessary if we lived with few possessions, like Jesus did. When He was arrested, He had nothing on Him but the clothes on His back.
Living like that isn’t really possible in our country, and there isn’t anything wrong with having clothes, cars, and insurance policies. However, Jesus is warning us to not put too much effort into accumulating material things that will only break down. We won't be able to take these things with us into the afterlife, so we shouldn’t love them too much now.
Instead, He wants us to spend our time and money on growing the charity of our hearts for those in our sphere of influence. Faith, love, and charity are the primary virtues God wants us to focus on. Living out these virtues daily is the treasure that will lead us to our salvation with Him.
Ponder:
Am I a good example for my children of not obsessing over the material things in our home or shopping too much?
Pray:
My dear Jesus, thank You for teaching us how to prioritize the things we own and how to spend our time and money. Give us the courage to put You first in our hearts.
Pray Together:
What clothes or toys can you and your children donate to teach them this lesson of not holding too tightly to your possessions?
