Today's Gospel: Luke 15:3-7

I cringe just thinking about writing this, but I have a confession to make: I have a horrible tendency to lash out at people just when they are apologizing. I know, it makes zero sense. After a lot of internal work (read: therapy, prayer, etc.), I realize where that tendency comes from. I just don’t want to get hurt again. I think if I make the aftermath of another person’s choice to hurt me bad enough, they won’t do it again. All it does, though, is encourage the people in my life to hide their true hearts from me at best, to give up on real relationships with me at worst.

Jesus has a very important lesson for us in our relationships, not just in today’s Gospel, but also in the very reality of His Sacred Heart. He goes after us. He welcomes us back with joy. He is not afraid of getting hurt again, because He trusts that His Father is big enough to make things right, to give real comfort whatever pain may come.

Most importantly, He is the shepherd. I am just one of the sheep. It’s not my job to teach. It’s my job to learn from and follow the Good Shepherd.

Ponder:

What are some ways in my relationships that I try to take the Good Shepherd’s job from Him, and how’s that working out for me?

Pray:

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, thank You for surrounding us with Your love when we go astray. Make our hearts more like Yours every day.
