Explore the importance of building a strong foundation in family and faith, drawing insights from today's Gospel reflection on resilience and steadfastness.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 7:21-29
When our oldest child was one year old, my husband and I began to look for a house. We always wanted to be homeowners, and we knew that the home we purchased would most likely need to be our "forever home." We had to prioritize what we needed versus what we wanted. As with most homebuyers, we decided that before anything else, a good and strong foundation was key. If a house has good bones, everything else can be worked on. More than sixty open-houses later, we found our current home, strong bones and all, and it has treated us well ever since.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus talks about building on rock versus sand. It’s not the furniture or decor that keeps a house standing. It’s the unseen, steady foundation.
The same can be true in parenting and raising a family. It is easy to focus on the visible wins: report cards, sports achievements, milestones. But what holds our children steady is often the small, consistent things they see from us: telling the truth even when it’s inconvenient, saying we’re sorry when we mess up, keeping our word, making time for prayer even on our busiest days. These are the quiet reinforcements of a strong foundation that make family relationships last.
The storms Jesus mentions, the disappointments, hard choices, loss . . . they will all come. Our children won’t escape them either, but if they’ve seen us stay grounded in Him, they’ll learn that they can also stand with Him when life feels unsteady.
Ponder:
What is one small habit you can strengthen that will help your children see your family and faith as a firm foundation?
Pray:
Lord, help me live in a way that shows my children what it means to stand steady in You.
Pray Together:
Choose one of the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12) and look for ways to live it out in your everyday routines.
