Today's Gospel: Matthew 7:21-29

A parent’s favorite reason for demanding their children do something has been passed down throughout the ages: "Because I said so.” This short explanation brooks no discussion, although there were times when my own children were young and it needed repeating with additional emphasis. It comes in handy for those occasions when we know what is in our children’s best interest but they are too young to understand exactly why they need to do it our way.

And it is often followed by "Trust me. I know best."

We parents are the authority in our families. Our children are our responsibility. Keeping them safe and ensuring their future as faith-filled adults is oftentimes a thankless and tiring endeavor, but one we willingly embrace.

Jesus knew this also. He taught the people who came to Him "as one having authority,” because He does have authority, direct from God! He alone has the final say on who will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Many times, He plainly rejected the scribes' teachings on how to live and said ‘do it My way and you will be saved.' No explanation needed. Just do it.

We are His children. We will not always understand the reasons why God chooses to do what He does. But just as we expect our children at times to do it "because I  said so,” we must accept God's plan and obey. Be willing to listen and follow His commands, no questions asked, and by doing so you will teach your children to do the same. Trust Him because He knows what is best for us all.

Ponder:

Do I trust God knows best or do I waste time in prayer asking God why?

Pray:

Lord, grant me the grace to accept Your will for my life and that of my loved ones. You alone know what is best for my family.
