Today's Gospel: Matthew 9:9-13

This is one of the most compelling passages in the Gospel. Who did Jesus come for? Did He come for the perfect? The ones who kept the Law perfectly?

It seems as if the Pharisees did not want Jesus to mix with the riffraff. What is He doing eating with tax collectors and sinners? Tax collectors were some of the most notoriously disliked of men. They had a reputation for taking advantage of and cheating people. The Pharisees must have thought it intolerable for a rabbi to be eating with such disreputable people. After all, according to them, one must strictly adhere to the Law and all the traditions surrounding the Law to be holy. They sought to be seen publicly as the holiest of men—having publicly adhered to the Law. It would be beneath them to socialize with anyone so publicly scandalous as a tax collector.

In response, Jesus uses the metaphor of a physician. Why would a doctor go to a healthy man? Obviously a sick man needs a doctor. Jesus is saying that sinners need Him and He has come to heal. He is THE physician. He healed people, both body and soul, throughout His ministry. After all, a perfect soul needs no savior.

Jesus calls all to Himself. No matter what your sin, no matter what you are feeling guilty of, Jesus reaches out to you in mercy and love. He wants you at His table; you don’t need to be perfect. Drop what you are doing and follow Him.

Ponder:

Have you dropped what you were doing and followed Jesus?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, Physician and Savior, please heal me of all my sin and guilt. Have mercy on me, a sinner, that I may eat at your table.
