Today's Gospel: Matthew 8:23-27
Today’s Gospel is the story of Jesus calming the storm. The disciples were getting more and more afraid in their relatively small boat on the very large, very deep Sea of Galilee during a violent storm. It must have seemed like a nightmare to them. They were incredulous to see Jesus asleep. They woke Him and asked Him to save them from impending destruction. How did Jesus reply?
“Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?”
He calmed the storm with a word. and they wondered at who He was.
Don’t we do this all the time? During all the storms and scariness of life, we get anxious and question God. There are days when we ask ourselves if we have the strength to get through the present nightmare. Whether it be illness, jobs, or everyday things like homework, clubs, kids' sports, or even getting to Mass, we feel shattered. Life can get not only messy, but overwhelming.
Sometimes we cry out to the Lord in fear and panic. Are You there Lord? Are You listening? Are You sleeping? We need to hear His voice saying what He said to the disciples, “Why are you terrified (or overwhelmed), O you of little faith?” We need to have faith that He is in the boat with us. He is there every moment. We need to calm ourselves, take a deep breath, and listen. He will help us get through; He will calm the storms of our lives. We know who He is. We just need to have faith.
Ponder:
During the violent storms of my life, do I have faith that Jesus can calm them for me?
Pray:
Dear Lord, I know You are there for me during life's storms. Help me to remember Your gift of faith. Please bless me with calm seas.
