Today's Gospel: Matthew 10:16-23
This is a difficult Scripture passage to ponder. None of us wants to be persecuted for our faith, but sadly, it is a reality that happens every day in big and small ways. There are people in our world today who risk death simply for being Christian. Like the martyrs of the early Church, they are willing to give up everything for Christ and the promise of eternal life.
While we may not be asked to give up our literal lives for God, we may be criticized for our beliefs. It is hard to be the only one in the room who goes to Mass and makes faith a priority. People may deride us for advocating for life from conception to natural death. We may be looked down on for wanting to live out our faith even when it is difficult.
As this passage indicates, faith can even tear apart families. Husbands and wives may not agree on how to live out their faith, which can cause tension. Teenagers may rebel against going to Mass or participating in family prayers. Young adults may reject God and argue vehemently against Church teaching, especially on social issues.
But Jesus offers hope. He tells us that we will be given the words we need to witness and speak the truth in love. Ultimately, we will be rewarded for persevering in our Christian faith.
Ponder:
Is there a situation in your family where faith is causing division? How can you continue to witness to your faith in a spirit of love?
Pray:
Dear Lord, please give me courage to persevere when I am persecuted for my faith in ways both big and small.
