Discover how to find rest in Jesus amidst life's burdens with insights from Matthew 11:28-30. Embrace faith over self-reliance for a fulfilling day.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 11:28-30
When I wake up in the mornings, I find that some days I feel more ready to embrace the day and its blessings and challenges with more fervor than others. This may depend on the season of the year, my season of life, or whether it’s a work and school day versus a weekend. Over time, I have realized that on the days I am struggling more, it is because I have settled in my mind that the success of the day depends on me. That it is my own efforts that will shape the outcome of the day and my satisfaction with it. I am very aware of my tendency to tell God, “It’s okay, I’ve got this.” When my labors lead to only increased feelings of dissatisfaction and being overwhelmed, my sense of frustration grows. And then I wonder why!
Jesus tells us,
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Am I going to Jesus when I insist on handling everything myself, without consulting Him or praying throughout my day at all? Of course I am not. Although I recognize deep down that I should be going to Him, I am human and sometimes my skills at this are not as good as I would like them to be, despite my decades of life experience. It is a daily commitment to wake up the next day and try harder, but that is what we should endeavor to do. It is raw and humbling, but it is what our spiritual journey will always come back to.
Ultimately, it is in Him that “my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” We can do all things in Christ who gives us strength.
Ponder:
What is one concrete way I can remind myself to turn to Jesus throughout the day rather than relying on my own efforts?
Pray:
Lord, help me this day to see Your face wherever I look and to remember that You are always there to guide me. Please show me the path to complete trust in You.
Pray Together:
Over dinner, share two ways that you trusted Jesus during the day.
