Reflection by Andrew Macdonald
Today's Gospel: Matthew 12:1-8
“I desire mercy, not sacrifice” are, for me, the most subtle yet important words of this passage. How often we forget, and yet this was what Christ’s ministry was truly about: mercy, forgiveness, kindness, charity, and love for the other. We can get caught up in dogma and doctrine, which is a very important part of our faith, yet lose the central message and theme.
It was a message from Christ to religious leaders in His time.
But did they listen? Do we listen?
I have been fortunate to have traveled the world and been in many beautiful churches adorned with incredible artwork that is so moving. What it must have taken to produce such beauty, all for the glory of God. And while I’m sure that these are incredibly pleasing to Him, what happens next? Do we walk out moved enough to show mercy to a homeless person just outside, or even someone that we know who needs our kindness and love?
It is such a simple thing to ask, and yet it is so hard . . . for all of us. But therein lies the challenge and the growth in us spiritually and faithfully. "I love you," "I’m sorry,” “Here, let me help you." Think about how often you have said these things to someone. You may be thinking, not enough, or you may be thinking, a lot. Whatever the answer, the Lord of the Sabbath asks for more and more.
I think parents exhibit this best. We often find ourselves showing great mercy to our children. After all, they are our children. Can we do the same for others? Parenting can be the best training for being good parents, but it can also be the best training for being a good person . . . a good Christian.
Ponder:
Are you merciful?
Pray:
Lord, we know You desire mercy, not sacrifice. Please fill our hearts with Your mercy, so we can feel Your love at all times. Let Your mercy always be our guiding light.
