Explore how the parable of the mustard seed encourages us to cultivate magnanimity, deepening our faith and love for others in everyday life.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:24-33

I would venture to say that most of us are quite familiar with this parable of the mustard seed, even perhaps googling the bush in all its glory from its humble beginnings. We might also  consider how God can grow our faith, allowing us to both flourish and begin the work of building the kingdom of heaven on earth. And yet, Ignatian spirituality adds a unique perspective that I find quite helpful here, that of magnanimity, or largeness of heart.

What is it to cultivate and live the virtue of magnanimity? Put simply, magnanimity is the “largeness of heart” that grows from the love of God loving us into being, ever present and faithful, even unto the cross. When we seek to place our relationship with our creator and lord first in our lives, and consider his unbridled love and sacrifice for us, our desire to return that love to God and others can grow. So much so that when we are living out of this virtue, our hearts can feel as if they are bursting at the seams. Of course, we can still say no to this invitation to grow in magnanimity, as God will never impede our freedom. But, oh, what can happen when we use our freedom to say yes!

As a parent, I am reminded of that very familiar Christmas story of the Grinch. You may even be able to visualize the part where the Grinch realizes the true meaning of Christmas. Here, the love he sees remains, despite the lack of presents, trees, or bows, and this loved lived out inspires his own heart to grow three sizes that day. Such a thing to behold, our faith then can move beyond ourselves and become a resting place for others to find love and shelter.

Ponder:

What might be holding me back from a greater faith and a larger heart?

Pray:

Lord, I know that in my every day You invite me to grow in faith, hope, and love. Help me to see those areas of my life that are perhaps in need of Your healing touch so that I can respond truly to Your call.

Pray Together:

Where is God inviting me to use magnanimous love in service to others? Look within your extended family, or local or church community for ways that you can share this love of God with others today.
