Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:47-53

As a fisherman gathers up fish in a net, God gathers us up, inviting us to be close to Him.

The fisherman isn't done once he has gathered those fish up, however. He has to sort his catch, tossing back what's bad, or what isn't yet ready. Jesus is talking with a group of people that's at least 50% fishermen, so they easily understand this idea. But the conversation takes a turn when Jesus warns that God's angels are going to be doing the sorting, and unfortunately, not all of us are "keepers." Unlike the fish that will be tossed back into the sea and given another chance at life, at the end of the age, the ones who are thrown out by the angels are going to land in the fiery furnace.

We're all called to be "keepers." We're called to be ready to follow God's word, and to do our utmost to lead others to Him. We don't have to do that in dramatic, obvious ways. Simply following our calling, performing the duty of the moment, praying for and with others: for us, for now, this may be the path to heaven. Like the head of the household is a good steward of what's in the storeroom, so we need to be good stewards of our words, our deeds, our gifts and talents, and the time we are given on earth.

Ponder:

Am I doing what I'm called to do today for the love of God?

Pray:

As I begin this day, Lord, please help me to remember to do everything for love of You and for those around me.
