Today's Gospel: John 1:47-51

To me, angels have always seemed to be mighty and mysterious. As a child, one of the first prayers I learned was the Guardian Angel prayer, calling for the guidance and protection of the heavenly being charged with watching over me. The archangels seemed even more mysterious, and certainly mightier, than my supernatural "babysitter," I always thought. They carried good news of great joy, and they defended against evil. Usually, anyone who encountered an angel would be struck with wonder and awe.

In today's Gospel we see Nathaniel, a newly-summoned follower of Jesus, struck with wonder and awe because Jesus has revealed a truth no human could have known. But Jesus dismisses that, telling Nathaniel that this is nothing compared to what he'll get to see later, if he continues to follow Jesus.

If Nathaniel follows Jesus, he will get to see Heaven. He will be struck with wonder and awe by the sight of the angels worshiping the Lord.

If we follow Christ, the same is promised to us.

Ponder:

How has your understanding of angels changed as you grew in faith?

Pray:

Lord, You created the angels to share the Good News and to protect us against evil. Grant that we will be open to hearing the messages of the great archangels, and one day see them, with You, in Heaven.
