Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:44-46
My mother loved pearls and told me once that she would treat herself with a pearl ring if she would stop biting her nails. She never got that ring; her habit was just too strong for her to stop until she got too old to bite them. She lived to be ninety. When mom was cremated, my brother chose an urn with mother-of-pearl around the neck of the jar. I was amazed and told my brother of Mom’s dream of a ring; he did not know that about Mom. He said that she had planned for a plain urn but that he wanted more for her and chose the mother-of-pearl one. I would like to think that Mom finally found the priceless pearl in Jesus.
The gift of heaven in the buried treasure or the fine pearls has a value that surpasses anyone’s comprehension, but the desire in obtaining it also has value. This value is great, but how can we earn it? We need only to seek Jesus in our daily lives, where we are. Seeking Him in everything we do, asking for guidance and help from Jesus, and trusting in His providence is what we can do. Surrendering ourselves in the search and obtaining our Lord is the sale of all our things to obtain Heaven.
“But seek first the Kingdom [of God] and his righteousness . . . ” Matthew 6:33
With prayer, reading the Bible, and receiving the Sacraments, we can find the Kingdom. Start each day with prayer and let Jesus know that you are seeking Him first.
Ponder:
How do you start your day?
Pray:
Dear Lord, help me to seek You in my daily life. Help me to know that seeking You first is all I need to do to find You and know that You are there for me.
