Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:44-46

When you first read these parables, you think, "Yes! The Kingdom of God is precious, valuable, and wonderful."

But there is more to it than that. Both the person who found the treasure and the merchant searching for pearls have been looking for something. Upon finding it, they rejoice -- and THEN they go and sell all they own so they can purchase that treasure.

God's kingdom, of course, is not for sale. But Jesus showed us that God's kingdom isn't free of charge, either. It requires our willingness to sell all we have -- to detach ourselves from the physical and spiritual baggage we carry around that slows us down and holds us back and tempts us away from God's way. Only then will our hearts and hands be open and ready to hold the treasures of the kingdom of God.

Ponder:

What do I need to let go of so there will be room in my heart for God?

Pray:

Jesus, teach me to stop grasping the things of this world so tightly, so that I may reach out toward Your kingdom with open hands and heart.
