Today's Gospel: Matthew 14:1-12

In Matthew’s account of the death of John the Baptist, after Herodias’ daughter finished her dance, Herod, “swore to give her whatever she might ask for” (Matthew 14:7). Aside from Herodias, I don’t think anyone really believed this extravagant statement. At the same time, I also think each guest wondered what would happen when she named her request. Would he follow through?

As a parent, I have found myself in similar situations, though not quite so dire. At some point, each one of my children has decided to test my consequences. Will she really take away my toy? Will I really have to go to bed early? Will I actually lose my birthday this year and stay five forever? (Yes, that happened, I am not proud to say).

I have learned to be careful with my words as my children have grown. I must check myself and ask, “Do I really mean what I am about to say? Am I willing to handle the consequences if this promise, be it positive or negative, has to be carried out?” I find it an interesting intellectual exercise to consider the fact that our young children see most things we say as a promise. As parents, we form their understanding of how promises work. Do people keep their word, in both positive and negative situations, or not?

No matter what your experience with others, there is one person in your life who always keeps His promises. Time and time again, God demonstrates His reliability, His trustworthiness, and His faithfulness. We believe in a God who keeps His promises to His children. St. Paul affirms for us that, “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Ponder:

How do you feel when you hear St. Paul's words that all things will work for good for those who love God?

Pray:

Dear heavenly Father, I know You keep Your promises. Please help me in moments of doubt to see clearly that You will always keep Your word, even when I don't understand how the events will unfold.
