Reflect on Jesus' miraculous presence during life's storms, and find courage and faith amid challenges through daily prayer and connection with Him.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 14:22-36

Today we see one of the greatest miracles of Jesus: walking on the water. Before that, the disciples witnessed another great miracle: feeding 5,000 men with only five loaves and two fishes. I imagine the apostles still trying to figure that out when they find themselves in a boat tossed about by the waves, without Jesus. And when they see Jesus coming to them, walking on the sea, they think He is a ghost and get even more frightened.

That can happen to us too. Sometimes we are in the midst of a storm of problems and preoccupations. We have witnessed in our lives how God is loving and gentle and how, so many times, His providence took wonderful care of us. But we still get frightened. We still lack faith, and we don't recognize that Jesus is in the middle of this storm and He is coming to help us. We have a hard time believing that the problems and preoccupations are allowed by God so we can be polished and purified, so we can love more and better and in this way fulfill the plan of God for each of us: holiness.

When that happens, we must try to listen to Jesus saying,

“Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

He invites us to walk with Him on the water, even with the strong winds, because, like St. Paul, we "have the strength for everything through him who empowers [us]” (Phillipians 4:13). When we are united with Jesus, there is no storm, not even a Class 5 tornado, that can destroy or harm us. It can hurt, but all the suffering we may have, united with the sufferings of Jesus, are useful for our salvation and for the salvation of those we love. Take courage!

Ponder:

How can I recognize Jesus in the middle of the problems that I'm facing? What He is trying to tell me?

Pray:

Dear Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief. I am weak and I feel afraid. Please help me see Your infinite love in every aspect of my life.

Pray Together:

Put some water in a plate and add some basil. Spread plenty of detergent on one finger. Place that finger in the middle of the plate and watch how the basil goes toward the edges of the plate. Talk about how when we are with Jesus (detergent) all the bad things go away.
