Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Luke 9:28b-36

The Franciscan Church of the Transfiguration on Mt. Tabor overlooks the Jezreel plain in Galilee and is a magnificent scene to behold. Here, the divine incarnation of Christ was revealed to the Apostles as Jesus was transfigured before their very eyes. And just as with Jesus’ baptism, God spoke with clarity as to who Jesus was, His chosen Son.
Yet, God in this moment spoke also to our identity, as those who are called to “listen to Him.” And much like Peter, we can seek to anticipate what we think God wants us to do, ready to plan and set the stage for God to act. Or more likely, ready to thrust forward down a path instead of waiting for God to reveal what is truly important for us to pay attention to. In doing so, much can be missed.

We learn from Luke that once God spoke, the Apostles fell silent. This time in prayer would be essential for them to begin to process what they had just experienced. This encounter with Christ was indeed a moment of consolation but also an opportunity for greater understanding and transformation. This is what the Eucharist is intended to be for each one of us. Much like Mt. Tabor, the Eucharist, as the source and summit of our faith, is an invitation to prayerfully listen to God revealing Himself to us. Like the Apostles, we too need this silent time in prayer to better prepare for the mission that God has planned for us. More than what we see, the transformation is in what we hear in the silence of our hearts. Just think of what our Church could be if we as a community listened with ears of faith first before acting and interacting in the world around us.

Ponder:

Am I as attentive to Jesus speaking in the stillness of my heart as I am to the voices around me? What would my home and community of faith look like if I paused to listen before acting?

Pray:

Father God, You desire me to listen and follow Your beloved Son closely. Help me to listen and encounter Christ each day so that He may guide me towards where I am to go, what I am to do, and who I am to be.
