Today's Gospel: Matthew 23:13-22

Jesus tells His disciples, "Beware of the scribes." They are concerned more about their possessions and their social status than they are the truth of the word of God. We should not be looking for a place of honor in the Church, but rather asking God what we can do to serve. We should, most definitely, use our gifts to serve, but we must do it humbly, giving all thanks and honor to God, in everything we do. I used to be a reader at Mass, and I was good at it and enjoyed it. I often got compliments on my strong and clear voice, and I appreciated those pats on the back. However, one day at Mass, when our youngest was two years old, she suddenly got upset that I had left her with her dad to read at the lectern. She started screaming, and I kept increasing my volume so others could hear me.

Everyone got a big laugh out of that, but for me, it was a rude awakening. God was making it clear that my serving role had changed (at least for the time being) to serving my family and my children. I was a little sad, but I did quit as a reader and sat weekly with my husband and daughter while someone else took my spot. Obedience to God's call is not just for priests and religious, it's for all of us as we travel this earthly road to heaven. Sometimes it's very difficult to imitate Christ in that regard, but meditating upon Jesus on the cross can move our hearts to act with courageous love, just as Christ did for our salvation.

Ponder:

Do I make my own decisions on how to serve God, doing what I like, or do I humbly follow where He leads?

Pray:

Fill my heart, God, with the love and humility of Christ My Savior, that I might serve You well.
