Reflect on the importance of vigilance in daily life as Jesus teaches us to stay alert and dedicated to our earthly tasks while preparing for eternity.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 24:42-51

The life of a firefighter is known for its excitement and adventure. However, firefighters do not fight fires constantly throughout the day. When they are not battling blazes, these community heroes stay busy diligently performing routine tasks such as training and maintaining equipment. They must remain alert and ready to respond when the alarm does sound.

In a similar way, Jesus reminds us in today's Gospel to remain awake and alert because, as He tells His disciples, "at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." (Matthew 24:44) In a word, the theme for the today's Gospel is "vigilance." Jesus is instructing His followers to stay sober and ready during this life. He warns us not to succumb to laziness and apathy or give in to the temptation to distraction from our heavenly goal.

Jesus is not telling us to neglect our daily duties in pursuit of holiness. Rather, He urges us to commit to our earthly tasks and fulfill them as faithfully as possible. Like the firefighter who exercises, repairs his equipment, and inspects his vehicle on his days off so that he will be strong and ready for duty, we use our time wisely, always remaining prayerful and alert, to fulfill our vocation and prepare for eternity in heaven.

In our prayer life as well, we exercise diligence. We can imitate the persistence of St. Monica, whose devotion obtained the conversion of her son, St. Augustine. Because of her prayers, he became a great saint and doctor of the Church. Through our prayerful vigilance, we believe that God can work miracles in our lives and the lives of our families as well. By remaining steadfast, we are like the faithful and prudent servant in today's Gospel, who was ultimately rewarded by his master.

Ponder:

What are some ways I can remain more vigilant each day in anticipation of eternity?

Pray:

Jesus, I offer my daily duties to You. Please help me to remain awake and alert each day so I am ready when You call me to eternal life.

Pray Together:

Ask the Holy Spirit's guidance in developing a prayer schedule to help your family stay consistent and spiritually aware. Post your schedule in a prominent place in your home.
