Today's Gospel: Luke 6:12-19

The recent knee surgery did not go as we all had hoped. The first several post-surgical days went exceptionally well and then healing turned substantially wrong.

As an elder, I know when to ask for assistance, and had done so for the several months that led up to surgery. Folks were in place for mowing and housekeeping and other minor chores.

But my needs had become more complex.

I could no longer stand long enough to cook, walk enough to get groceries, prescriptions, or attend church. But more than that, my mental health was faltering; hopelessness and helplessness crept in. I was exhausted spiritually, physically, and mentally after so many months of pain.

Reading the Gospel verse about Jesus standing on level ground—with his helpers and those in need—struck me. Jesus is looking eye-to-eye with those of us in dire straits. Our helpers are there with Him, looking for their opportunity to offer their gifts.

No matter what our challenges, Providence will provide helpers to meet our need. Jesus prayed to discern who His helpers would be. In this time of my needs, I, too, pray fervently for similar guidance and to be open to the gifts of others.

Ponder:

Through prayer Our Lord was guided to choose those who would help Him. How do you pray for helpers when you’re in need? Can you pray to be a helper even when you have needs of your own?

Pray:

Heavenly Father, in those times of need and in my fearful desperation, remind me always that You see me and hear my prayer for help. In those times that I see another in need, guide me to offer whatever assistance I can to ease their burden.
