Today's Gospel: Luke 6:20-26

Today’s Gospel is the Sermon on the Plain, after Jesus came down from the mount. In this Gospel, Jesus addresses His disciples rather than the multitude. This is significant because it is a more intimate address, and, I think, specific to the mission of the disciples. Broadly, it speaks to us as disciples, too.

In this Gospel, Jesus speaks of experiences of the faithful in terms of their opposites. First of all, He speaks of the poor, the hungry, the mourning, and the reviled as being blessed. Then, He notes that those who do not suffer in this way, that is, those who have wealth, food, earthly happiness, and enjoy a good reputation have made their choice on earth rather than in heaven.

Because we so often are conditioned to seek comfort and good things, it comes at a price. We choose the present rather than Christ. However, I think there is more to this Gospel. I find it encouraging and full of hope, especially as it relates to our vocations in marriage and family. Most of us are not living extravagant lives. We have struggles. We have disappointments. Life is filled with varying levels of suffering.

When we align ourselves with Christ and live as His disciple, we are choosing Hope. We are choosing the better portion, and we will be blessed in heaven for it. It isn’t an easy choice, and Jesus acknowledges here that choosing Him will likely lead to suffering, but in the end our reward will be in heaven.

Ponder:

Following Christ and aligning our will to His comes with sacrifice and suffering. It may not mean a lifetime of suffering, but it certainly means we will not be spared suffering. How can we turn suffering in this life into hope?

Pray:

Lord Jesus Christ, remind us that our suffering on earth draws us closer to the hope of living with You in eternal life.
