Today's Gospel: Luke 7:1-10

Today's Gospel is about an incredible act of faith, charity, and humility. The centurion first showed his charity, because he was worried with a slave, a person who had no rights and was considered as an “object,” property of his master.

Then he showed great humility. As member of the Roman Empire who had great power over the people, he could have ordered Jesus to cure his slave, but he didn´t even go by himself to talk to Jesus. He asked the elders of the Jews to do so.

Finally, he showed an incredible faith. He was officially a pagan, but he probably had heard about Jesus, maybe even witnessed some miracles, and believed Jesus could help his slave. Because of his humility, and recognizing he was a sinner, he didn´t feel worthy of receiving Jesus in his home. He also recognized the great power of Jesus as king, that with only a single word, he could perform the miracle.

Jesus praised his faith, cured his slave, and he will be remembered to the end of time, since his words are repeated every day, all over the world, during the holy Mass: “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.”

There are many things we can learn from this centurion. One of them is the power of intercession. We should bring to Jesus petitions from everyone we know who is in need, whether their needs are spiritual or material, and even from the people we don´t personally know but who also need the compassion and care of our Lord.

Ponder:

Who needs my prayers today?

Pray:

Dear Lord, please increase my faith, my humility, and my love for others. Jesus, I trust in You!
