Daily Gospel Reflection for September 18, 2026

Today's Gospel: Luke 8:1-3

Even though the apostles were men, women consistently accepted Jesus's teachings on faith and followed along on His ministry. They provided for Jesus and the apostles from their resources. Some of the women experienced the healing powers of Jesus. He cast out seven demons from Mary Magdalene, who was a faithful follower from then on.

Later in the Gospel, women were weeping along the way of the cross. They weren't yelling "Crucify him!" like so many others. Jesus told them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children." (Luke 23:28)

My mother-in-law, Irene, was one of those faithful women who never wavered. She never missed Mass, especially on First Fridays. It didn't matter what anyone said; her faith was her rock. Like Mary, Our Mother.

I don't mean to downplay a father's powerful influence on his family in any way, but, today, we're talking about a woman's role. As women, we have an essential role in planting the seeds of faith in our families. Mary was a humble peasant girl, an orphan. Because of her faith and adherence to God's will, she is now the Queen of Heaven and Earth, over angels and men. Never underestimate the importance of our role in the plan of salvation.

Do I follow Jesus in my thoughts and actions, as these women did in the Gospel?

Please help me to keep my focus on you, Lord. Never let me stray from Your love.
