Today's Gospel: Mark 9:30-37
Why are we still trying to be perfect? Why do we diet cleanse and eat organic and Kon Marie and highlight our hair?
Why do we clean the house before we have company and pretend it always looks that way?
Why do the photos we post online all have filters on them?
Why is it so scary to let our guard down and just be us?
The world does not need us to pile up accomplishments. The world does not need perfect people.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us this secret: trying to be great in the eyes of the world, even in the eyes of the Lord, is a recipe for an unsatisfying life.
Benedict XVI tells us: “You were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.”
And yet, Jesus Himself tells us what he means by greatness is not what the world tells us is great. What the world needs is the greatness that comes with laying down our lives for one another.
We are called to cultivate hearts of welcome - humble hearts that bow down joyfully in the service of others.
Who can we serve today? Who can we welcome?
Let’s all bow down low and reverence the image of God reflected in one another.
Ponder:
Who can we serve today? Who can we welcome?
Pray:
Lord, help me to see your face in every person I meet today. Teach me to serve and welcome each of them with an open heart.
