Today's Gospel: Luke 7:36-50
I have become a “frequent flyer” to the confessional—but it wasn’t always that way.
When I was a teenager, I decided one day that I would no longer frequent the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I figured I could just tell God I was sorry without engaging with the “middle man” of the priest. My sins were embarrassing, and I did not want to speak them aloud. I thought that I was taking the easier path, but, in the end, that was not the case.
I stayed away from Confession for years. My spiritual life suffered as a result. One weekend, I decided to try a retreat at my parents’ parish. The culmination of the retreat was the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
At the moment when I stepped into the confessional, I felt like the woman who had bathed Jesus’ feet with her tears. I had an overwhelming feeling of relief, knowing that I was truly forgiven. That confession brought me back to a more robust relationship with Jesus.
Just as Jesus responded to the woman in the Gospel, so is He ready and willing to forgive us of our many sins. He wants to extend to us the peace which surpasses all understanding. We are all just one Confession away from a clean slate.
If you have not been to Confession in a while, why not go back this week? You may be amazed at the feeling of tranquility you experience, knowing that you have been fully forgiven by God. Sin separates us from God, but Confession bridges the gap, bringing us closer to the One who created us. Don’t let fear and embarrassment keep you away from Confession. It is a healing sacrament that can restore your relationship with God.
Ponder:
Have I ever felt an overwhelming love for God as a result of His forgiveness of my sins?
Pray:
Heavenly Father, I know that You do not want me to be separated from You. Help me to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life with Your grace.
