Today's Gospel: Luke 8:1-3

We assume the resources that this Bible verse references is about a stock of materials, money, or other assets that these women possessed that could be drawn on to serve Jesus in His ministry. What is significant is that it does not talk about surplus.

A surplus is the amount of something left over after requirements have been met. Recall the leftover fishes and loaves collected after feeding thousands.

These women are not sharing what is left over from their daily life; they are giving what they have to support a cause.

And they are giving something more.

Like the Apostles, they are giving the resource of self, their person, for love of God and the love and salvation of their community. This love may well be the greater of the resources that they offered.

Ponder:

Being a Christian is more about sharing our life than sharing our surplus, and sharing surplus is often easier. Think back to when you’ve made donations. Have they always been a donation of material goods? Have you made any donation of time, of yourself?

Pray:

Holy Spirit, guide me to always share Jesus in the way I live, not only with my physical resources, but with my time as well. Help me to pause for a moment to listen to someone, to assist someone, when I’m in a hurry. Help me to find ways to share of myself in Your name.
