Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Luke 8:4-15

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us to pay attention to the path we’re on. The parable is a familiar one: the sower scatters the holy seed in hopes that it’ll take root in our lives. He expects deep faith, abundant good fruit, and that we stay the course. The message seems so simple, but even Jesus' own disciples had to ask Him for insight. As sisters in Christ, we can become so involved in our vocations that we overlook the simple message, too.

Christ explains that the hardened soil, the well-trafficked path, doesn’t allow the Word of God to penetrate beneath the surface. Our souls’ soil can become crusted over, not receptive to new growth, and resistant to the rain (or reign) of grace. Sometimes we become set in our ways and end up stuck in a spiritual rut. Are we open to taking a hoe to our habits and routines that stagnate our growth? Christ asks us to dig deep and eliminate the things that keep us from thriving.

Who (or what) are the distractions in our lives, that flutter in and out like little birds, swooping in to steal away any good seed spilled on the surface? We are given the gift of faith through Baptism and expected to guard it and nurture it to full fruition.

What are the weeds that poke and choke us? Our schedules (like our closets) can get jammed with too much stuff. Are we like those listeners who heard the Word but didn’t make any changes in their ways? Jesus wants our hearts and minds to be clear and uncluttered.

Gouge out the rocks, hack at the weeds. Our roots in Him must go down deep, transforming our thoughts and refreshing our day-to-day way of living.

Ponder:

Renew your baptismal promises and remember the graces received through this sacrament. Take a look at your path of life. Are you moving closer to or farther from Christ? Consider His gifts of grace and the fruits of your life.

Pray:

Dear Lord, I ask for detachment from all things. Soften the soil of my heart so that my life bears abundant good fruit.
