Today's Gospel: Luke 8:16-18

The three versicles of this parable of the lamp contain a lot to process and understand. First, about the purpose of lighting a lamp: to illuminate the room. The light must be seen and not hidden. Jesus is the Light of the World, so we need to share this light with others and not keep it to ourselves. This is a call to spread the Gospel to everyone we can.

The second versicle is a warning that everything we do will, one day, be revealed. This message is very useful in teaching our children to always tell the truth. Because God sees everything, there is no point in trying to hide what we do. We may even fool the people around us with a lie for a while, but one day we will be called to be accountable for what we have said and done.

There is also a reference to Jesus' teachings that the Pharisees were trying to hide and prevent from being spread. Jesus is telling them that there is no point in trying to contain His words because He is proclaiming the truth, and the truth always shines and reveals itself.

The third, at first glance, seems a little unjust, but only if we think about material things. Jesus is talking about the light of the Gospel, the faith in His words. The more we seek to learn and to teach the Gospel, the more light we get, the more we understand, the more our faith is enhanced, and the deeper in our hearts those words grow. On the other hand, if we don't care about the words of the Gospel, we end up losing our faith and that seed won't bear fruit.

Ponder:

How am I faithful to the truth? Do I struggle with lies, even small ones? How am I spreading the Gospel, especially to those I love?

Pray:

Dear Lord, help me always be faithful to Your teachings. I want every day to get closer to Your light and help others to see that light,  too.
