Today's Gospel: Luke 8:19-21
At first glance, this Gospel passage doesn’t make any sense. We know that Jesus loved His mother deeply, and that she is the model of discipleship. Yet it appears that Jesus is dismissing her and His other brethren by not inviting them in when He learns they are standing outside.
Rather, Jesus is teaching us about our inheritance. In Jesus’s culture, property and wealth passed down from generation to generation regardless of behavior or beliefs. Sharing blood with someone guaranteed a rightful claim. When Jesus responds to His mother and cousins in this way, He is explaining to His followers that no one, not even His own mother, inherits the Kingdom of God because of their bloodline.
We don’t become disciples simply because we know someone who knows Jesus. If we have super-holy parents or siblings, that doesn’t mean we’re automatically in with the Lord. Each one of us is called to be a disciple by “hear[ing] the word of God and act[ing] on it.”
The fact that Mary is Jesus’s mother does not give her a free pass to behave in a way that is contrary to Jesus’s teachings. Mary, like the rest of us, was called to live the life of a disciple. Mary did this perfectly in her earthly life.
With these simple words, Jesus has extended an invitation to each one of us. We get to become the immediate family of Jesus by listening to the Word of God and living our lives according to His teachings. We become more than students; we become entitled to the inheritance of the Kingdom of God. Jesus isn’t condemning His mother but rather inviting us to become part of the greatest family of all time.

How does thinking of myself as an immediate family member of Jesus change the way I think about my call as a disciple?
Pray:
Lord Jesus, You have invited me to become part of Your family, and co-inheritor of Your kingdom. Help me to always keep my ears open to hear Your Word and let my life’s actions reflect my love and devotion to You.
