Daily Gospel Reflection for September 23, 2026

Today's Gospel: Luke 9:1-16

I had to laugh as I meditated on this passage and memories surfaced. A few years ago, I was preparing to attend a Christian festival thatI had participated in yearly, knowing that the day always comes with extreme heat and a 90 percent chance of rain. I had just finished packing extra clothing, food, drinks, chairs, a tent, bug spray, and other necessities. 

Peering at my pile and proud of all I had prepared for, my sense of accomplishment came to a sudden halt when my husband remarked, “Jesus said take nothing for the journey.”

I replied lovingly, “The twelve were stronger than I.” I did pause, though, and gave my pile a second look. Certainly, there was something in the mix that I didn’t need. I looked more closely at each item to discern what I should rely on Jesus for and what I should take with me as a measure of good preparation. Then I thought about it a little more and adopted a rule of thumb: If I take all of it, then I'm most likely not to need anything. I will rely on discerning that Jesus wants me to be fully prepared and trust that He has guided me to pack the necessary provisions.

Jesus’s call in this passage is to abandon worldly cares for spiritual mission, which I was fulfilling even with an extra set of clothing in case of rain. I was giving Jesus a day full of worship, service, and community by attending the day-long festival, fulfilling the call of His spirit within me and pretty sure Jesus would be okay with my providing food, drink, and shelter for the day. As it turns out, the heavens opened up just before evening Mass. I was able to change my clothes and participate comfortably.

Ponder:

Have you struggled with letting go of worldly possessions in service to the Lord? Where is God calling you to let go of earthly things and replace them with spiritual mission or prayer?

Pray:

Loving God, please give me the desire to detach from worldly attachments so that I may grow closer to You. Open my heart and mind to serving You and building Your Kingdom.

Engage together in a fall clean-out. Discuss things in the household that are unnecessary and donate them to your favorite local charity.
