Today's Gospel: Luke 9:1-6

In today’s reading, Jesus sends the Apostles out to share His message—a little preview of what they would need to do after His death.

As I reread these verses, a few interesting things stand out.

First, Jesus told them if they weren’t welcome, that they should leave.

Second, they were not to take anything with them. They were to trust wholly in God that all needs would be provided.

Third, even though the Apostles had spent so much time with Jesus, they probably didn’t feel ready to share the good news, let alone perform miracles.

Fourth, despite any concerns they may have had, they obediently went and did what they were instructed to do.

Since we also are called to share Jesus’ message, there is plenty that we can learn from this passage.

Like the Apostles, we most likely don’t feel prepared or even comfortable sharing about Christ. We can either be like those faithful followers and have faith, or we can hide away like Jonah tried to do when sent to Nineveh.

Just like the Apostles were given what they needed to fulfill their mission. God will provide all we need.

As hard as it can be to accept, not all will listen or be ready to hear what we have to say. The salvation message can’t be forced on people because accepting Christ is a free choice.

However, we must remember that all things work in God’s timing. If we dutifully follow God’s direction, our heartfelt attempts may be the seeds of faith that will someday bloom.

Ponder:

Take a moment to reflect on your life. What seeds were planted that led you along your faith journey? What seeds can you plant today?

Pray:

Dear Lord, thank You for the graces You bestow on me and my family. Help us to always be willing to go where You call us to go.
