Today's Gospel: Luke 9:43b-45
How troubled the Apostles must have been to hear Jesus say that He would be delivered “into the hands of men.” They knew that He had the power of God and that He was God’s son, our Lord. Let’s remember that we have several thousand years of Church teaching and tradition to help us understand God’s plan of redemption. The Apostles did not. They thought that His kingdom would be an earthly kingdom.
The thought of losing Jesus must have been unthinkable to them. So horrible that they could not consider it. Jesus could have explained it, but we are told that the meaning was hidden from them so they could not perceive it. They were afraid to ask. They did not want to know. And Jesus clearly knew that it was not yet the time for them to understand.
The psalm response for today reminds us that the Lord is our shepherd. He is such a good father. He guards us from harm. As parents, we also protect our children from information that is too difficult for them to understand at their age. As sheep follow their shepherd, we trust God that He has a plan and knows infinitely more than we, His little children, do.
Jesus protected the Apostles from the knowledge of all that would happen to Him. It was too much for them. They were afraid to even think about it. But He told them to remember His words. It would be important later. Yes, it would be important as the Church was formed and the Evangelists wrote the Gospels.
We must trust God even when we don’t understand. Sometimes Jesus will reveal things to us gradually. The Good Shepherd protects us and only gives us what we can handle.
Blessed be God.
Ponder:
Is there a time when you did not understand something in Scripture or an event in your life that seemingly did not make sense?
Pray:
O Lord, please help us to trust You always, especially when we don’t understand Your plan. Help us to always remember that we are the little sheep, and You are the Good Shepherd.
