Today's Gospel: John 1:47-51
I remember watching a five-minute video several years ago entitled “What Happens During Mass?” I watched with amazement as a host of angels filed down the aisle and gathered around the altar during the Eucharistic Prayer. They voiced with exuberance the words of the “Holy, Holy” with the congregation and reverently adored our Lord at the consecration. It made me realize how angels are really present all around us.
My dad also helped me keep the angels in mind, as throughout my childhood he would invoke his guardian angel whenever he needed to find a parking spot and within a minute he would! Each of us has a guardian angel and heaven is filled with hosts of angels who give glory and praise to God.
Today we celebrate the feast of the Archangels: Michael the warrior, Gabriel the messenger, and Raphael the protector. They are the only three angels mentioned by name in the Bible, thus pointing out their significance in salvation history.
Very few on this earth have seen angels with their own eyes, but in today’s Gospel, Jesus tells Nathanael that he will be one of them:
“Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Others who have seen angels include: Abraham, Lot, Jacob, Tobias, Moses, Elijah, Daniel, Zechariah, the Virgin Mary, and the shepherds in Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth.
Although we cannot see these spiritual beings with our eyes, may we know in our hearts that they are present in our lives to fight for us, bring us God’s messages, and protect us. May this feast day be both a reminder to us of their presence and an opportunity to thank God for them.
Ponder:
What role do the angels play in your life right now? What role would you like them to play?
Pray:
Dearest Lord, thank You for the gift of the purest of spirits, the angels. May we invoke their aid and join with them in praising You.
