Today's Gospel: Matthew 18:1-5, 10
In today’s Gospel, the disciples ask Jesus, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?” I wonder what they though His answer would be? Someone in a position of power, such as the Pharisees? Or maybe themselves, as Christ’s followers? But Jesus teaches them a valuable lesson of humility, pointing out that to enter the Kingdom of heaven, we must become like a child – humble, trusting, loving, and caring.
We can understand the disciples wondering who is the greatest because too often we want to be seen and recognized by others. We want to feel important and be acknowledged for our good works. But does our desire for this attention come at a cost?
Although we can’t shield our children from the evil of the world forever, we have the primary role and responsibility to provide a stable and loving home. Christ calls us to model a good and holy life, just as He did by example in his own life. He also provides each of us with a guardian angel to watch over and guide us.
What example do we show our family? By choosing to be present with our loved ones, taking care of the household and their needs, we demonstrate a humble and caring relationship. Loving our spouse and children in small everyday moments allows our children to grow in love. Maintaining a simple prayer life and trusting God during tough times teaches our children to grow in faith. Through careful attention to how we care for our family, we also can become more like a child, leading our own children to heaven.
Ponder:
Reflect on how you model a successful, humble, Christian life for your children.
Pray:
Angel of God, guide us in loving and protecting our children the way Jesus loves us.
Pray Together:
Read today's Gospel as a family. Discuss what it means that we’re called to become children of God.
