Today's Gospel: Luke 10:25-37

Galations reminds us how easily it can be to find ourselves turning from the written Word and seeking advice elsewhere. Or maybe we are not seeking these disbeliefs as much as they seem to be thrown at us from every direction. The society we live in has drastically changed courses in the past couple of years, to the point of making you wonder which way is up or down. In a society of cancel culture, we are tempted to throw away the roots of our beliefs, the true north of our Faith. In this passage, we are asked if we are finding favor with human beings or with God. Who is it that we are seeking wisdom and favor from if it is not from God? If we try to please people, we are no longer a follower of Christ, for it is only Him from Whom we should be seeking favor.

In Luke, God clearly tells us where we should seek to find His favor. Jesus says,

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. . . . Do this and you will live.”

It really cannot be much clearer than that. But when we have the world around us pushing against that belief, and if we do not keep our connection to the Church and our faith, it is easy to fall apart.

Jesus also asks us not to turn a cold heart to the world. Bad things happen all around us every single day, but He asks us to continue to show mercy and forgiveness. Maybe it’s a child who forgot to pack a lunch, so you share some of yours with them. Maybe you cover the cost of an expense for someone to help relieve their financial burden. Maybe you simply offer a smile to someone who needs it. No matter how big, no matter how small, Jesus asks us to participate in works of mercy, just as He did. It would be easy to turn a blind eye, to keep up the wall around our hearts for fear of being taken advantage of or made fun of. But we need to be brave in a world where a Christian way of life seems to be less of the norm, and a fear to proclaim our faith becomes prominent.

Ponder:

Are you committed to proclaiming your faith as a Christian?

Pray:

Lord, help us to remember even on our hardest days how much You love us. Please help us to remember to turn to You and stay true to the path that You have so graciously laid out for us.
