Today's Gospel: Luke 10:1-12
If today’s Gospel could be summed up in just a few words, I think it would be God saying, “Trust me.”
Perhaps it is the stage of life I’m in right now—my oldest approaching high school, my youngest in preschool, and so a certain number of hours each week where I’m solo and my children are under others’ care—that has made me more and more aware of God’s unending provision for us. Not always as we expect it, of course, but it’s always there.
Jesus’ first instruction in this passage is to “ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” When I’ve read this in the past, I thought He was alluding to how much work there is to do. But now I think he’s telling the disciples to ask because He already knows the Lord will provide.
After this instruction, He tells the disciples He’s aware of the danger He’s sending them into—"I am sending you like lambs among wolves”—and in the same breath He tells them to bring nothing and greet no one along the way. Sounds a little crazy out of context, but taken together it seems to me that He’s saying, “I’ve got this. I’ve got you. I know where you’re going, and I’m coming with you. You can trust me.”
Trust that you’re where you’re supposed to be. Trust that you’ll have enough. Trust that I will lead you to the next thing.
He’s asking them, and He’s asking us: Do you trust me?
Ponder:
What are you holding back from the Lord right now? Can you trust in His provision and surrender that situation, relationship, or trial to His care?
Pray:
Lord, You know I struggle to trust in You. I want to do too much myself and forget that You provide every breath I breathe each day. Help me to grow in trust and hope.
