Today's Gospel: Luke 10:13-16
Today’s Gospel reading is not of the warm, fuzzy variety. After sending seventy-two disciples out on a mission to spread the Good News, Jesus has this to say to unrepentant towns:
“For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.”
Two thousand years later, it’s too easy to sit back and think, “Seriously, guys, get it together.” But of course that’s exactly what we can’t do.
We Are Witnesses
Mighty deeds have been done in our midst, too. Hopefully we’ve all had experiences of hearts being opened, relationships being reconciled, and wounds (perhaps our own) being healed. Those miracles, large and small, may seem like the end of those chapters of our stories, but they ought to be the beginning of something new.
To know Jesus and to experience His love must move us to reach out to others, offering the love and mercy we ourselves have received. This was the mission Jesus gave to His disciples then. It’s what He calls us to now.
We Are Missionaries
When we go out—whether it’s to a stranger, someone in our school or workplace, or someone within our own homes—we must remember that it’s Jesus’ message we are called to share. Our experiences, our teaching must all point back to Him. If those we minister to listen to us, we have to know that they’re really listening to Jesus. Should they seem to reject us, they are really rejecting Jesus.
We can stay focused in this call by being aware of our own need for repentance and by recourse to the sacraments. Being a missionary isn’t about our saving souls. It’s about pointing souls to the only One who can save them.
Ponder:
When have I witnessed a mighty deed, and how did it change how I minister to others?
Pray:
Lord Jesus, make me attentive to the mighty deeds You will do today and give me the courage to draw others to see You in them.
