Today's Gospel: Luke 11:5-13

In a couple of days, my firstborn son will turn thirty years old. I remember the day he was born as if it were yesterday. I remember heading to the hospital, the mix of thoughts and emotions that flooded my whole being. There was excitement, fear, relief, apprehension, but above all, there was expectation. The room was ready, the crib was up, the car seat was installed . . . all that was left now was to go through labor and bring home my baby boy.

There are no words to express what I felt the first time I laid eyes on my newborn son. All the waiting, all the hoping . . . all was now satisfied by love. That moment passed, and life went on, but I still have the memory of that moment when I found what I was looking for.

God speaks to us through our desires.

“Seek and you will find.”

There is a tension in the seeking, an invisible thread of hope that tethers us to the object of our desire. Like the tension on a fishing rod, it lets us know to keep on reeling in, to persevere. The struggle is necessary, for it is what feeds our hope.

“For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds.”

Have you ever looked at Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and just knew He was the One? Have you ever, if only for a moment, heard your heart whisper, “I found him whom my soul loves” (Song 3:4)?

I have, and the memory of that moment keeps me coming back for more.

Have you ever looked at your brother who is suffering and, if only for a moment, heard your heart whisper, “I found him whom my soul loves”? Have you ever felt the tension pulling from the cross?

Ponder:

“Whom are you looking for?” (John 20:15) If the answer is not Jesus, ask yourself, why not?

Pray:

Lord, help me always seek You in the eyes of the suffering and the poor. Help me see behind the veil of their broken flesh. Help me to keep seeking until I see You.
