Today's Gospel: Luke 10:25-37
In order to inherit eternal life with God, Jesus agreed with the scholar that fulfilling the Greatest Commandment would accomplish this. Love God and love all people with mercy. We all want to spend our eternity in heaven, but that is sure easier said than done, right?
We all strive to love God by going to Mass and Confession, praying to Him (not just when we want something), and speaking of His blessings and awesomeness whenever we can. But there is always more we can do to know and love Him. There are prayers we can recite, Litany of the Hours we could join in with our priests and deacons, daily Mass, being involved in helping our church or community, and working harder to replace our vices with His virtues. On this feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, we could also try to say a daily Rosary to honor the Mother of our Lord.
Besides that, trying to love ALL people is so very difficult. Personality clashes, unfulfilled expectations, overwhelming demands on our time can all make it hard to get along with others. Plus, in our struggling world there are an abundance of people who need God’s help, and we are just one person who can’t help them all.
Rather than being overcome with feelings of deficiency, let’s look at the parable Jesus told right after answering the scholar. The gist of the Good Samaritan story was that two people passed by the beaten man, and one person stopped and did the right thing in that moment. He didn’t let culture, race, or gender affect his decision, he just stopped and helped because it was the right thing to do.
That should give us encouragement to not stress about being the perfect Christian, but just strive to do the next right, loving, merciful thing in the moment.
Ponder:
What is God calling you to do to love Him or your neighbor with more of your heart?
Pray:
My dear Jesus, help us to try harder to love You and everyone around us with our whole heart, being, strength, and mind.
