Today's Gospel: Luke 10:38-42

"Burdened with much serving."

What mom can't relate to that feeling? It seems like all we do is serve and serve and serve, from morning to night: feeding and diapering the baby, putting up the gates to keep the toddler off the stairs, filling yet another sippy cup, buying more markers and posterboard for more school projects, making and cleaning up after yet another meal that at least one family member refused to eat.

It sounds to me like Martha was suffering from burnout. She served so much that all she could see was the never-ending list of tasks before her—and she cried out to God in frustration.

And Jesus does not give her what she asks for. He doesn't ask Mary to get up and help Martha do even more things. He tells Martha, instead, to lay her burdens down, as He invites us all to do in Matthew 11:28. Our burdens, like Martha's burden of serving, can feel so heavy. But when we set them down to rest at the feet of the Lord, we will gain the strength we need to pick them up again.

Ponder:

What burdens keep you from resting at Jesus' feet?

Pray:

Lord, help me to look to You when I am feeling burdened and burned out. Redirect my heart toward what is truly necessary, that I too might choose the better part.
