Today's Gospel: Luke 11:5-13

Oh, that inconvenient friend!

Let me tell you a story that my friend shared with me. The husband of this friend is a baritone (I’ll call him Dan). And this husband had a friend (pretend his name is John) who, shall I say, partied a bit much.

It was about 2:30 a.m. on a sweltering Sunday morning and Dan was leaning out the upstairs gable window above the back door, overlooking the driveway. Once again in a bit of a stupor, John came up the drive looking for a place to sleep and some food.

Dan is a deeply Catholic man with a delightful sense of humor. As John raised his hand to knock on the door, Dan spoke in his deepest theatrical voice directly over John’s head, saying, “This is the Lord!” Upon which John took off running and got about half way down the block until he realized that if it was the Lord, he couldn’t hide and a split second later yelled back towards the house, cursing. Don.

This story, now fifty years old, still makes me smile.

Dan, of course, let John in, again. John knew he could rely on Dan and his wife to open their door and feed him what he needed, which was more than just "fish and eggs." Dan and his wife were the Body of Christ offering John more than he knew how to ask for. Eventually, through their guidance and love and with the Holy Spirit’s persistence, John turned his life around and turned to the Church.

John kept knocking, and his friend kept opening the door.

Ponder:

Who is your inconvenient friend, how do they press in on your life, and how can you respond to them as the Body of Christ?

Pray:

Holy Spirit, send Your wisdom into my heart so that I too can be the Body of Christ in my small, little corner of the world. Guide me to know what my inconvenient friend truly needs and help me minister accordingly.
