Today's Gospel: Luke 11:1-4

We find Jesus praying in a certain place. We might think of the certain place that Jesus was praying as a mountain or hill away from the crowds. Perhaps it was a place of solitude. I wonder how many times in the Gospels Jesus appears praying in an out-of-the-way place. I imagine many times. Some of us would like to go to an out-of-the-way place to pray. I have been longing for a retreat where I could pray and listen more deeply to the Holy Spirit. I know many of you would like to get away.

Our Lord gives us a simple prayer to pray every day, whether we are on a secluded mountaintop or in our homes. It begins with the word Father. Jesus takes us from our everyday concerns and places us in the Father’s presence. He directs us to His Holy Name. Our Father is Holy. He leads us to pray that the beautiful kingdom He has prepared for us will soon be realized--by doing His will in our lives as the saints do His Will in heaven. We ask in this prayer to be fed both naturally and supernaturally and forgiven. We promise to forgive those who have sinned against us, and we are directed to ask for the strength we need to avoid temptation. Whether we pray one word or the entire prayer, Our Lord raises our spirit upward. He reminds us in Matthew 6: 5-6 that we don’t have to go to a certain place to pray. We can pray in our inner room, and our Father who sees our prayer in secret will reward us.

Ponder:

Do I have a certain place that I go to pray?

Pray:

Jesus, guide me in prayer. Help me to find that certain place, the inner room, deep inside of me for prayer.
