Today's Gospel: Luke 11:15-26

Division. How often we hear that word today.

It seems in our current time we take sides with everything—politics, sports, family relations, culture, even religion. All these things can be good and holy if lived in the light of Christ. We all say we despise division—but do we contribute to it by our words, thoughts, and actions?

In his book, Lift Up Your Heart by Fr. John Burns, he states clearly, “Sin introduced division.” He goes on to say, “Thus, in addition to bringing division, sin brings strife and accusation.” (pg. 51). It was just as true in the beginning of time as it was in Jesus’ time and as it is today. We live in a fallen world where we accuse even those who do good as having selfish, ulterior motives. When will we learn?

Jesus makes it clear that division cannot conquer evil. Jesus said,

“Whoever is not with me is against me.”

Do I remember those words when I speak words of anger and division? Am I guilty of scattering souls when I should be gathering others to Christ?

The admonition of the second part of this Gospel is a frightening example of what could happen if we try and overcome our sinfulness by going it alone. We need fortification of the sacraments, especially Reconciliation, to be prepared when stronger forces of evil try to destroy our resolve. We must continually look to put our house in order so evil will find no dwelling place there.

We can choose to unite and strengthen ourselves and each other.

Lord, teach us to dispel division and walk with You.

Ponder:

How am I working to stop division in the world today?

Pray:

Dear Lord, help us to recognize sin causes division and run to You for reconciliation. Make our hearts gathering hearts, bringing others to Christ.
