Today's Gospel: Luke 11:42-46
In our journey as parents, we come to understand what it is to place the needs of our children above our own, not out of obligation but out of love. We learn to set expectations and guidelines while modeling the desired behavior and helping our children to learn the why and how to follow. If we do otherwise, we have taught them to adhere to rules simply because it is required, with no deep roots and easily tossed aside. This is what Jesus is saying to the scribes and Pharisees, who seem to be more focused on loving their position and themselves instead of loving others.
In this passage, the reprimand we hear is not simply of condemnation but rather of God’s desire for us to soften our hearts and to choose love. Though like the Pharisees, we try and fail, Jesus does not give up on us. His words are not subtle but spoken to each one of us directly with the hope that we might look within ourselves. That we might also go deeper than the fulfillment of the law to the desire for a right relationship with God.
In Jesus’ time, the scribes enumerated over 600 obligations that a faithful Jew needed to follow. As you can imagine, life could easily become a “burden hard to carry.” Jesus instead offers, "my yoke is easy, and my burden light” and provides the greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37-39) that fulfills all the rest. As Christians, this is a reminder to truly live the faith that we profess. Moreover, there is a responsibility to help others to come to know that same love and mercy that God has shown us, that in meeting us, they may come to know Christ.
Ponder:
What is most important to me in my faith life? When people meet me, do they also meet Christ?
Pray:
Jesus, You present a clear choice in my life today, one that is simple, loving, and full of mercy. Help me today to consistently choose You and allow me to be a window to Your love.
