Today's Gospel: Luke 12:39-48

Halloween is right around the corner, and my house is decorated for the season. Several years ago, I purchased some plastic skulls that are currently sitting on my front steps. They remind me of the paintings of Mary Magdalen and Saint Jerome in which the saints are pictured with skulls, a sign of memento mori, remember that you will die.

No one likes to think about death, but this Gospel serves as a reminder that we are all going to die and meet God. While this scripture refers to the return of Jesus at the end of time, it also is relevant in terms of our personal deaths. We do not know the day nor the hour. While some people who are ill know that their deaths are drawing near and have time to prepare, each day people wake up not knowing that it is their last day.

It is easy to think that we have plenty of time to prepare to meet God, especially if we are young and in good health, but the reality is that none of us know how long we have left. If you had to give an account of your life before God today, how would you fare? Are there things you need to do to get your spiritual house in order? If so, this Gospel is a wake-up call to focus on what matters most. We need to always be ready for the hour of our death.

Ponder:

If God came for you today, would you be ready to meet Him? If not, what do you need to do?

Pray:

Dear Lord, please help me to always live my life in such a way that if I were to die today, I would be ready to meet you.
