Today's Gospel: Luke 13:1-9

I love coming up with new ideas for my life. The follow through, however, is often lackluster. When I’m not careful, I can become quite frustrated with myself about the plans that have resulted in little fruit. Like the person who owned the fig tree, I consider throwing the dream away rather than continuing to be disappointed.

To be sure, not every idea I have ought to be carried out. We all have those middle-of-the-night epiphanies: I’m going to exercise every day and it’s going to be great! I’m going to quit my job and start a new company that will support my family in two months! I’m going to [fill in your ideas that lack roots here]. These ideas are like fireworks. Bright, bold, and brilliant but little substance.

In this Gospel, we are dealing with something different. This is a tree that has roots, deep ones, if it is a three-year-old tree. In terms of dreams, this would be something you have considered for a long time. You continue returning to it, trying to puzzle out how to achieve this dream. Instead of getting frustrated, like the owner of the fig tree, perhaps it’s time to take a different approach.

Give it to God. The owner entrusts his tree to the gardener, who is going to cultivate the ground, weed, water, and fertilize the tree. Have you entrusted this dream to God? Have you asked Him to take charge of its future? It’s a risk, to be sure. The gardener doesn’t promise fruit will come, but he does promise to give the tree the best chance it can. By trusting God with our dreams, we can be sure that if they are part of His plan, they will come true.

Ponder:

What dream can you entrust to God's care today?

Pray:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for inspiring me to dream. Please help me to discern which dreams to pursue, following Your lead and desiring only Your will.
