Today's Gospel: Luke 18:9-14
How quick I am to point fingers at others as I go about my many daily tasks. When something is imperfect I tend to protect my own self-dignity. I get angry and complain on a regular basis abour trivial matters, from a broken package or appliance, to waiting in line for an appointment. So many trivial problems come to mind that people in other parts of the world wouldn't be familiar with.
I often fall back on erroneous thinking that I have worked harder than another and thus am deserving of this or that. The truth is, however, I have often been in the right place at the right time only by God's will. Whether it is being born in America, given an opportunity to obtain a higher education, or finding the right marriage partner, all that has been granted to me is not because I did something as much as God allowed it to be.
Like the tax collector in today's Gospel, I must acknowledge that I am a sinner. It is through God's mercy rather than my own works that His love will deliver and save my soul. When all of the distractions and busy-ness that make up my day are removed, it is in the stillness of the night that my confidence is shaken and weaknesses exposed. During these hours, I am reminded of prayers such as the Litany of Humility, which asks Jesus to relieve my fear of being wronged or ridiculed. It is through such moments, in times of loneliness and emptiness, I remember I am not entitled to anything. Instead, humility takes over, and I must recognize everything I have belongs solely to God.
Ponder:
Am I overly confident of my own righteousness? Do I regularly ask God to have mercy on me, a weak and poor sinner?
Pray:
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire that others may be chosen and I set aside. Grant me the grace to desire that others may be loved more than I.
