Today's Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40

Pope St. John Paul II said, "Man cannot live without love. He remains a being that is incomprehensible for himself, his life is senseless, if love is not revealed to him, if he does not encounter love, if he does not experience it and make it his own, if he does not participate intimately in it."

Man is incomprehensible to himself unless love is revealed to him. It is love that reveals us to ourselves.

In Matthew 22, we are instructed to love God first with all our soul, all our might. Consequent to this, we love each other. We must give those placed in our care our very best. Our lives will be measured in how much we loved, not in our achievements. It is a mistake that so many of us make, to selfishly focus on ourselves rather than our relationships. Instead, God calls us to sacrifice, just as His Beloved Son sacrificed for us on the cross.

Ponder:

Do I actively seek to offer sacrificial love to those God entrusts to me, or am I more invested in my own self-love, such as with my reputation or net worth?

Pray:

Lord, I sing You songs of praise and rejoice in Your goodness for the life You give those closest to me. Help me to actively love my family, particularly those most dependent on me, such as my children and parents.
